Before you start packing, there are a few more steps to complete before you embark on what's bound to be the summer of your life. With AmeriCamp's guidance and support, you'll navigate these final preparations smoothly, ensuring everything is in place for an unforgettable adventure. 

Let's walk through what comes next.

Background Check & Health

Once you've secured your placement at camp through AmeriCamp, there are crucial safety and health protocols to follow, ensuring a secure and enjoyable summer for everyone involved.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is mandatory for all camp participants' safety. You'll need to pay an add-on fee through your AmeriCamp portal, which is directed to the DBS service. The DBS application process is designed to be quick and straightforward. Once completed, you will receive a physical certificate by post, typically within 2 to 4 weeks. However, it's wise to start this process early as there have been instances where it has taken up to 10 weeks.

Alongside the DBS check, you must complete the AmeriCamp Health History Form. This form is essential for health and safety reasons and for insurance purposes. You will need to get this form completed by your registered General Practitioner (GP).

By completing these steps, you’re adhering to the necessary legal and safety requirements and demonstrating your commitment to ensuring a safe and healthy environment for yourself and the campers. It's all part of preparing for a responsible and rewarding role as a camp counselor. 

Acquiring a Visa

The journey to your summer adventure includes a final, important milestone: obtaining your J-1 visa. This visa is your ticket to an American escapade, and AmeriCamp plays a pivotal role in this process, acting not just as your guide but also as your sponsor.

Your journey to obtaining a J-1 visa begins with paying the final program fee once you are hired. This fee is crucial as it confirms your placement and allows AmeriCamp to start processing your visa documentation. Upon payment of the final fee, AmeriCamp will issue your DS-2019 form. This document is vital as it confirms your J-1 visa sponsorship and makes you eligible to apply for the visa.

The next step involves paying a fee to your local U.S. embassy, which is a prerequisite for booking your visa interview appointment. All AmeriCamp visa applicants must visit the embassy in person for the interview. Fortunately, this process is typically short and straightforward, focusing on confirming your visa eligibility.

After the interview, the embassy retains your passport to imprint the visa. This process generally takes between 5 to 10 working days, after which your passport, now with the visa, will be mailed back to you. During this time, you’ll complete AmeriCamp orientation. 

Book Your Flights & Start Packing

With official business out of the way, it's time to get practical. Booking your flight to the U.S. is on you, but it marks the exciting first step of your actual journey. As for packing, remember to bring along the essentials and a dash of your personality. Think about the activities you'll be leading or participating in and pack accordingly. But also, bring those items that make you, well, you! 

Take these essentials into consideration: 

1. Clothing: Pack a mix of summer shirts, t-shirts (6-8 recommended), casual and sports shorts (2-4 of each), swimwear (2-3), and a hoodie or jacket for cooler evenings. Include walking and casual shoes, plenty of socks and undergarments, and maybe a rain jacket.
2. Accessories: Don't forget your mobile phone, chargers, plug adapters, sunglasses, a hat or cap, a watch, and a reusable water bottle.
3. Toiletries: You can bring basic toiletries or plan to buy them in the US. Essentials include a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, and sunscreen.
4. Personal Documents: Keep your passport, AmeriCamp visa, DS-2019 form, SEVIS receipt, camp contract, flight tickets, insurance cards, and necessary medical forms organized and accessible.

Remember, your camp will typically provide bedding, towels, and sometimes toiletries. Pack enough to get through a week, as laundry facilities will be available. And while it's exciting to bring personal mementos, focus on essentials to keep your luggage light.
