Most camp counsellor interviews follow a standard job interview format, but with a few differences tailored to summer camp life and experience. We’ll walk you through how we can prepare you for your interview, and the best summer of your life! 

How to Prepare for Your Summer Camp Counsellor Interview 

While the idea of a job interview overseas may seem stressful at first, AmeriCamp is here to support you through your entire camp counsellor process, interviews included. Once your application has been completed and distributed to different summer camps, you’ll most likely be contacted by a camp director for an interview.  

Here are some things you can do to prepare for your interview, and your amazing upcoming summer!  

Dressing Professionally For Your Interview 

Whether it’s an in-person or virtual interview, dressing professionally for a job interview is key. It’s an important part of making a good impression with your potential camp director and anyone else sitting in on your interview. It can also help you feel comfortable and confident. 

When choosing an appropriate outfit for a job interview, consider clothes that are business casual, such as:

• A nice blouse or button down shirt
• Slacks or dress pants
• A blazer 
• Closed toe shoes

If possible, avoid clothes that have:

• Tears 
• Stains
• Wrinkles
• Noticeable defects

Basic Job Interview Preparation

Before thinking about specific questions you’ll be asked at your camp counsellor interview, here are a few things to consider:

• Arrive on time to your interview: Be sure to make extra time for your in-person or virtual interview. Being punctual is very important, especially as a camp counsellor.
• Understand and be proud of your skills: Are you great at a specific sport? Did you ever babysit for friends or family before? These are useful skills to keep in mind during your interview. 
• Research your camp: take a look at their website, check out the activities they might offer, and take note of what sort of camp they are.
• Think about common questions, and how you want to respond: Think about your strengths, weaknesses, any prior experience you might have, and how you’d like to respond to those sorts of questions. You can even practice with a friend!

Preparing Your Resume For Your Camp Counsellor Interview 

Your resume is an important part of any job interview, but using the same resume for every position you apply to isn’t optimal. Your resume should reflect your strengths and experiences related to the job you’re seeking, and it should be in a format that’s easy to read. 

Tailoring your resume for your Camp Counsellor interview 

While you don’t need experience to work as an AmeriCamp counsellor, your resume can still reflect related skills for your interview. It’s a good idea to list other associated skills on your resume such as babysitting, tutoring, computer skills and any experience you may have with recreational programs on your resume. 

Camp counsellors may also look for applicants that have:

1. Strong people skills
2. Great communication skills
3. First aid training
4. CPR certification 

Be sure to list any related career or work study experience on your resume, and any examples of other similar experiences you think would help you stand out as a camp counsellor candidate. 

Resume Formatting 

Your resume can give your interviewer a snapshot of your career, so it’s important to make sure it’s easy to find important information that relates to your interview. Be sure to include:

• Your name and contact info
• Your professional history
• Your education
• Any extra curricular activities 
• A section to list your skills

To help make your resume easy to read, you should also:

• choose a basic font like Times New Roman
• Use a font size between size 10 to 12
• Use bullet points when you list several pieces of information under sections like education and your professional history
• Proofread your resume 

Feel free to include a summary and objective, but try to keep your descriptions short and simple, as your resume should be around a page long. 

Mock Camp Counsellor Interview Questions

In your interview, you’ll likely be asked a variety of questions that relate to camp counselling, but also to any previous work experience you have, your education, and about your personality. While that may seem like a lot to think about, your AmeriCamp team is here to support you through your entire application process. 

Try answering these mock interview questions to prepare for your interview. 

Questions About Experience 

• Have you ever worked as a camp counsellor before?
• Have you ever attended a summer camp when you were younger?
• Do you play any sports?
• Have you ever worked with children before?

Questions About Your Personality 

• What are you passionate about?
• Do you have any hobbies?
• Why do you want to become a camp counsellor?
• Do you consider yourself a team player?
• What are your strengths and weaknesses? 

Situational Questions

• Can you describe a time when you had to take control of a situation?
• How would you resolve conflict between two campers?
• Why would you be a good fit for our camp?
• How would you handle a camper who does not listen to instructions?

Questions to ask your future employer 

If your potential camp director offers you the opportunity to ask any questions, you can always ask about:

• Your responsibilities 
• What activities are available during your program 
• Any questions you have about your living quarters 
• Safety and emergency protocols 
• Camp rules and regulations

You’ll learn important things about the camp you may be placed with, and also show that you’re interested in your camp. 

What To Do if You Don’t Know How to Answer a Question at Your Interview 

No matter how much you prepare, there’s a possibility that you may be asked a question you’re not sure how to answer. While you may feel a little anxious about that chance, here are a few things you can do instead of sitting there silently:

1. Take a moment to think about your answer (and ask for a moment to do so) 
2. Be honest
3. Ask a follow-up question

About Summer Camp Counselling With AmeriCamp 

AmeriCamp summer camps are located across the United States, and give counsellors the opportunity to experience a classic American tradition, along with making new connections with others, learning important skills, and experiencing other cultures. 

As a summer camp counsellor, you’ll have the opportunity to travel, participate in fun activities, and connect with your campers and fellow staff! American summer camps offer activities depending on their location, and what type of summer camps they are. Popular types of summer camps in the United States include:

• Day Camps: which are only open during daytime hours, and do not offer overnight stays
• Themed Camps: which are based around a particular activity or sport, like basketball
• Religious Camps: which are focused on a specific religion or religious philosophy
• Special Needs Camps: which are for campers with disabilities 

Each AmeriCamp summer camp offers their own unique programs and activities! Camps with access to a pool or body of water may offer activities that include watersports, while other camps based in cities might offer special activities like the performing arts, or robotics. 

Some common American summer camp activities you may experience include:

• Hiking and climbing
• Team sports like soccer or volleyball
• Arts and crafts like tie dying or jewellery making
• Scavenger hunts and team building games

Camp Counsellor Expectations 

Although responsibilities will vary for different camps, summer camp counsellors are generally expected to:

• Lead and participate in camp activities with their campers
• Help prepare activities 
• Help with equipment set up or tear down
• Assist with snacks or core mealtimes 

Specialist camp counsellors with specific skill sets might be put in charge of a specific activity for the entire camp, and sometimes counsellors can be responsible for a group of campers for the entire program duration. 

Camp counsellors are also expected to be patient, understanding, and able to think on their feet. Conflict resolution is another key skill; along with good teamwork and flexibility. 

Pay, Benefits, and How to Qualify 

As a summer camp counsellor, you’re guaranteed to earn $2000 minimum during your summer camp placement! You’re also provided with health insurance for the duration of your contract, accommodation and meals, and access to a 24/7 emergency hotline for support. 

In order to qualify for our camp counselling program, applicants need to:

1. Be proficient in spoken English
2. Be free of criminal history and able to provide a background check 
3. Be 18 or older by May 1st of your program year
4. Be available from early June to mid August 
5. Be able to supervise and interact with campers

Applicants will also need a J-1 visa, which AmeriCamp will sponsor. Once your application is complete, you’ll be ready for your camp placement!

Your Summer Camp Counselling Placement 

After you complete your application, AmeriCamp will distribute it to our affiliated summer camps across the United States. A specialist placement team and camp directors personally search through the applications in order to find the perfect fit for our camp counsellors. 

It’s a good idea to remain open about what camp you’d like to be paired with, because once your camp placement is over, you’ll have 30 days in the US to travel wherever you like!
